In 1992 the Catechism of the Catholic Church was issued by Pope John Paul II. It became an instant best seller, but people soon found that it was not quite the easy read they had expected. The Catechism was meant not only as a reference for other published catechetical materials, but also as a source for instructional courses. In publishing the Catechism the Pope also encouraged local conferences of bishops to publish their own catechisms for the people under their jusrisdiction.
Accordingly, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) published the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults in 2006. The text follows the universal catechism in organization, but includes stories of saints and has a more reader friendly format.
